Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Franchise Is Planning 4 More Movies In New Trilogy Approach, Says Writer

  • The
    Rebel Moon
franchise will consist of six movies, planned as two-part trilogies.
  • Despite mixed critical reviews, strong viewership on Netflix may lead to future films.
  • Rebel Moon Part One
received strong viewership, paving the way for a potential six-film saga.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon franchise is expanding to six movies in a new approach to the trilogy, co-writer Kurt Johnstad reveals. Directed by Snyder, with a script he co-wrote with Johnstad and Shay Hatten, the sci-fi franchise follows a young woman with a mysterious past who leads a rebellion against an evil galactic empire. Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire was released on Netflix in December 2023 with Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver releasing on April 19, and there are already plans for a third film to complete the trilogy.

Now, during an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Johnstad revealed there are plans for a total of six Rebel Moon movies. However, the co-writer clarified that it will still be a trilogy, but “with each movie being two parts.” Read his full comments below:

So, basically, we have everything mapped out for many, many movies. Beyond Three. Beyond four. I will go on the record now. We’ve figured this out all the way to movie six. Now, if we are so lucky and fortunate enough to continue telling these stories, that is our hope. Netflix is interested, and we’re waiting to see how these first movies go. But there is certainly a treatment for three and four. We’ve laid out very detailed… All we have to do is start writing. Actually, Zack has already started writing because he’s like that. I think he’s already written the first thirty pages of movie three. So once we get the green light to start writing, if that happens, it’ll happen fairly quickly because Shay (Hatten), Zack, and I are pretty fast. And we’ve done all the work. It’s not like, “Well, what about this.” We know exactly what we need to do.

This was always going to be a trilogy, and this is well-known; we’ve talked about this in the press already. When we delivered the first movie, it was two hundred-plus pages. So we were like, “Oh my god.” Then we tried cutting it back to one thirty-five, I think, and we started cutting all of the cool character stuff, and Zack’s like, we need to go back. How do we do this? And then, again, this has been written about before, but then collectively, we said right around here in the 90th (page) if we wrote a cliffhanger, which in movie one is the Gondival scene, if we wrote that then we could break this into two parts.

So when I say six movies, it’s really a trilogy with each movie being two parts. That’s how we’re thinking of it now. But, again, a lot of things have to happen. Our ambition and what we want to give the fans don’t always match up with the reality of the world’s economy. But that’s what we want to do. We want to give fans six movies or a trilogy in two parts each.

Should Rebel Moon’s 6-Movie Plan Happen?

Johnstad reveals there are plans for a total of six Rebel Moon movies, though there is the question of whether they should actually happen. Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire reviews reamed out the film for its substandard story and heavy reliance on familiar sci-fi/fantasy tropes. As a result, the movie earned Snyder his worst Rotten Tomatoes score of his career at 21%. Its audience score is slightly better at 57%, but is still considered Rotten by the review aggregator.

Rebel Moon Continues A Disappointing 2023 Sci-Fi Trend (But 2024 Could Fix It)

Unfortunately for movie lovers, Rebel Moon continues a disappointing 2023 science-fiction trend — though 2024 seems poised to fix the issue at hand.

Since The Scargiver is the second half of the same story, it’s difficult to imagine it making many significant improvements. However, if Rebel Moon has one thing going for it, it’s viewership on Netflix. Part One received 23.9 million views within its first three days, securing the position as the top English-language film on the platform for that week and marking the ninth-best debut for a Netflix original film in 2023. In turn, Part Two should receive similarly strong viewership upon its release on April 19.

If Rebel Moon is receiving strong viewership, Netflix will likely green-light future films in spite of any negative critical reception. Snyder and company are already well into developing Rebel Moon 3, which Netflix will likely officially announce after the release of Part Two. It’s unclear if the six-film saga will come to fruition, but with Netflix’s interest and Snyder’s dedication, the Rebel Moon franchise seems poised to fulfill its ambitious plans.

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire
is streaming on Netflix.
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver
releases on April 19.
