Four Port Alberni men to receive lifesaving awards for saving drowning teens

Adult men advocate for superior safety measures at Sproat Lake soon after tragedy that claimed just one lifetime

4 adult men from Port Alberni will be obtaining lifesaving medals for conserving two young people in a canoeing incident on Sproat Lake last November.

The award is bittersweet for two of the men, Bob Cole and Kelly Lance. When two youngsters were saved, a third drowned and his physique was not observed until the subsequent day.

The Lifesaving Society, BC and Yukon Branch, will award Cole, Lance, John Mahaffy and David Murphy with the Silver Medal of Merit at the 112th yearly Commonwealth Awards for Honour and Rescue on March 9, 2024 at the Fairmont Lodge Vancouver.

The tragedy unfolded on Nov. 11, 2023, a statutory holiday in B.C.
