Best movies, TV shows being added and removed from Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and other Canadian streamers in August

While the SAG-AFTRA strike continues, amid significant concerns about the existing pay structures established before the rise of streaming platforms, we’ve reached the last of month of summer TV and movie releases of the year.

From the highly-anticipated return of the Netflix hit Heartstopper, to famed Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 landing on Disney+, and the final season of the AppleTV+ series Physical, there’s still quite a bit to watch.

As you click into your favourite content on these streaming sites, it’s a good time to think about how these actors and writers should be compensated fairly.

But with every new addition comes things being removed from streamers, including several Adam Sandler films leaving Netflix in Canada, in addition to the original 1984 Karate Kid film.

Here are the highlights for all the movies and TV shows coming, and leaving, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Crave, Apple TV+ and Paramount+ in Canada in August:

Heartstopper Season 2

A resounding success for its first season the Alice Oseman series is back again, landing on Netflix Aug. 3. Fans of the show will finally be reunited with Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), with Season 2 really solidifying that Oseman is one of the best for telling very real, honest and truthful teen-focused stories. Season 2 extends and expands the narrative from the first season as these teens continue to explore relationship, queerness and teenage-hood.

Painkiller

Following the Hulu hit Dopesick, Netflix is entering the chat in cultural criticism of Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, and the Sackler family’s responsibility in the opioid crisis. Painkiller, premiering Aug. 10, isn’t necessarily a story that haven’t heard before, but with an impressive cast that includes Matthew Broderick, Uzo Aduba and Taylor Kitsch, it’s an easy sell.

If comedies movie are what you’re drawn to, there are only a few days left to watch some absolutely hysterical hits leaving Netflix Canada in August. This includes Adam Sandler movies 50 First Dates and Happy Gilmore, Jason Segel’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the Amanda Bynes hit She’s the Man. The iconic film Love Actually is also leaving Netflix on Aug. 11.

Only Murders in the Building Season 3

The Hulu hit starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez is easily one of our favourite shows on the entire Disney+ platform, and Season 3 is even more exciting with the addition of Meryl Streep. For Only Murders in the Building Season 3 (premiering Aug. 8), the series heads to Broadway, where Season 2 left off, after Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), the lead actor in Oliver’s (Short) play, dies onstage.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Following its massive theatrical release, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be available to stream at home on Aug. 2, the film that (in our opinion) is the best in the Guardians franchise. Chukwudi Iwuji is absolutely engrossing as the villain, The High Evolutionary, and James Gunn just added so much more heart and emotion to this film.

Red, White & Royal Blue

Whenever any piece of entertainment references the Royal Family, even in fictional form, people around the world perk up and pay attention. That’s the best way to describe our curiosity with the upcoming Prime Video movie Red, White & Royal Blue (based on the novel by Casey McQuiston), premiering Aug. 11. Uma Thurman plays the U.S. president (the first woman to hold the position) and in the film her son Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez) gets in a public altercation with the U.K.’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). But as the story progresses, they start to fall for each other.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart

Another adaptation of a novel, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, starring Sigourney Weaver, premiers on Prime Video Aug. 4. The series follows Alice (Alycia Debnam-Carey), who went to live with her grandmother June (Weaver) when she was nine, after her parents died in a mysterious fire, setting off on a family drama of past secrets.

While its been teased for a while, that full series of the 2000s hit The O.C. is now set to be removed from Prime Video on Aug. 22.

Billions Season 7

We’ve reached the final season of the drama Billions, which premieres on Crave in Canada Aug. 11, promising a season where “alliances are turned on their heads.” The series marks the return of Damian Lewis’ Bobby Axelrod, alongside co-stars Paul Giamatti, Maggie Siff and Asia Kate Dillon, with the stakes set higher than ever before.

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty Season 2

Taking us back to the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, Season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (premiering Aug. 6), takes place between 1980 and 1984, including the 1984 NBA finals moment between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird (Sean Patrick Small). The series boasts an all-star cast including John C. Reilly, Jason Clarke, Adrien Brody, Quincy Isaiah, Sally Field, and Jason Segel.

Physical Season 3

It’s a bittersweet moment next month for AppleTV+, with the series Physical, starring Rose Byrne and Rory Scovel, coming to an end with its third season, premiering Aug. 2. Creator Annie Weisman moves her story’s lead character Sheila (Byrne) to new heights, having to face competition after her Season 2 aerobics success.

Invasion Season 2

The alien invasion continues with Season 2 of Invasion, premiering Aug. 23, starring Golshifteh Farahani, Shioli Kutsuna, Shamier Anderson, India Brown, Billy Barratt, Azhy Robertson, Paddy Holland and Tara Moayedi. Things have escalated since the first season, as the human determine how to best fight the invading creatures.

Mixtape

A new documentary landing on Paramount+ Aug. 1 looks at how mixtapes made a significant impact on the hip cop culture we know and love today, featuring stars including 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky, DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Mark Ronson, Mike Tyson and more.

Twisted Metal

Based on the PlayStation game, Anthony Mackie is John Doe, taking us on his post-apocalyptic road trip to pick up and deliver a package. It’s a lot of driving, promising performances and a deranged clown.
