Carnahan and the Scott brothers say they will use the original premise of the series as the template for an action film. In the original, four Vietnam vets convicted of armed robbery escape from military prison and became do-gooder mercenaries.

The Middle East will replace Vietnam as the place the four did their tour of duty, but Carnahan said the origin story is the jumping-off point.

The original series, which ran from 1983-87 and starred George Peppard, Mr. T, Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz, followed an unofficial team of Vietnam vets who will stop at nothing to get the bad guys. Sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit, these four commandos escaped from a maximum-security stockade and now survive in the Los Angeles underground as soldiers of fortune.

Stephen J. Cannell, who created the show, will produce the movie with Jules Daly, Ridley Scott, with Tony Scott executive producing through their Scott Free banner.

Also producing are and Stephen J. Cannell, the latter of whom created the original TV series.

Bradley Cooper in Talks for The A-Team

Recovering from his $45 million Hangover, Bradley Cooper is now in negotiations to take the role of Face for Fox’s feature adaptation of The A-Team.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cooper had been rumored for some time to play the dashing Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck, part of a group of framed, on-the-run war vets who get into adventures while evading the military. Dirk Benedict originated the role on the 1980s NBC series created by Stephen J. Cannell.

The hunt is on for actors to portray team leader Hannibal, as well as characters B.A. Baracus, and Howling Mad Murdock.

The big-budget project, being directed by Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces) from a screenplay by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (Wanted), already has a June 11, 2010, release date. Ridley and Tony Scott are producing.

So, A-Team fans, who do YOU think should take the role of team leader Hannibal, and the characters B.A. Baracus, and Howling Mad Murdock? Don’t be a wuss, this is your chance to be heard!

Liam Neeson in Talks for The A-Team

Liam Neeson is in talks to star as Col. John “Hannibal” Smith in 20th Century Fox’s long-gestating bigscreen adaptation The A-Team. Bradley Cooper is in early talks to play Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck.

According to Variety, the Joe Carnahan-directed film is based on the 1980s TV series and will go into production in late August for a June 11, 2010, release.

Ridley Scott is producing with Jules Daly and series creator Stephen J. Cannell, with Tony Scott exec producing through Scott Free. Carnahan and Brian Bloom polished a script by Skip Woods, whose recent script credits include G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Neeson is in talks to play Hannibal, the role originated by George Peppard, while Cooper would play “Faceman,” the role played by Dirk Benedict.

Carnahan, Fox and Scott Free have kept the series premise — four war vets wrongly convicted of armed robbery escape from a military prison to become do-gooder mercenaries — but they’ve replaced the campy nature of the series with a tone closer to those of Mission: Impossible and Ocean’s Eleven.

Still to be cast are the roles of Capt. “Howling Mad” Murdock, played by Dwight Schultz in the original, and Sgt. “B.A.” Baracus, the role that made Mr. T an ’80s icon.
