Petra Nemcova modelled “swimsuits” for Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue in 2002 and, the following year, she appeared on the cover of the magazine that launched several modeling contracts for her. In addition to her work for SI, the Next Agency model graced the pages of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and the French magazine Madame Figaro, and was a model for companies like Max Factor, La Perla and Cartier.

Supermodel Petra Nemcova was born on June 24, 1979, in Karina, Czech Republic. She is known worldwide for her 2003 cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Ironically, on Dec. 26, 2004, she had to hang on to a tree for eight hours without a swimsuit, when a Tsunami hit Thailand. She suffered multiple broken bones and her boyfriend, photographer Simon Atlee, was killed.

Her first American TV appearance was on the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, where the smitten host (who announced his love for her and British singer Dido) predicted that she would make the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue in 2003 — and he was right.
Petra Nemcova in tsunami
In December 2004, Petra and her boyfriend Simon Atlee (a British fashion photographer) were caught in the devastating Asian tsunami disaster. Their hut on the Thai beach resort of Khao Lak was swept away by the tsunami, leaving Petra holding on to a tree for eight hours while the water washed by. She was rescued and taken to a hospital to treat a broken pelvis and several internal injuries. Unfortunately, Simon Atlee died.
Petra Nemcova
Petra Nemcova considered herself “lucky to be alive,” and she gave back to those who were not as lucky by posing from her hospital bed for Us Weekly as a fundraising effort to donate $200,000 to tsunami relief efforts. She also started the Happy Hearts Fund — whose mission is to help children who’ve been affected by hardship or loss as a result of natural, economic or natural disasters — as well as wrote a book, Love Always, Petra, which was published in December 2005.
Nemcova stands at 5′ 8″ with brown hair and blue eyes and a gorgeous face and physique. Although, she has more fame then most people can ever imagine, those who know her best say that she is a very down to earth and normal person. She does not let all of the fame and fortune she has get to her head. In fact, she considers herself lucky to be alive. Nemcova was in South East Asia when the devastating Tsunami that claimed thousands of lives hit the area. Her vacation home on the beach was destroyed and she was forced to cling to a tree for almost eight hours through 50 mph winds, while waves crashed around her. At the time, she was vacationing with her boyfriend, Simon Atlee, a British Fashion photographer, on the Khao Lak beach. Unfortunately, Atlee has not been seen since the tsunami and he was most likely killed and washed out to sea.
Nemcova suffered some injuries including a broken pelvis, but still did a photo shoot from her hospital room with US Weekly to help raise money for those who were affected from the tsunami. Her efforts raised well over $200,000.
Apart from appearing in the SI Swimsuit Edition magazine, Nemcova has also been featured in Elle, Madame Figaro, and Stuff Magazine. She is truly a role model and a classy act.
